Safer walking routes for schoolchildren

Problem

children crossing street The Alingsås Municipality in cooperation with Trafikverket are tasked with assessing the safety of routes that schoolchildren take to school. To get a better understanding of the situation it was decided that the most important information would come directly from the key stakeholders, i.e. the children and their parents. It is important to know the locations of interest and the type of problem associated with it. Also important is the number of students that pass each of these points.

The process of taking a survey from creation to final report is time-consuming and prone to error. Surveys must be designed, distributed, collected, analyzed and a report issued at the end of the process. Also an easy way for students and parents to record difficult or dangerous locations is necessary to make this survey a success. It is desirable to minimize the burden on staff by automating the tasks of issuing, collecting, analyzing the data and then generating the final report.

Solution using pointSurvey

pointSurvey from Entergate AB was chosen for this project, first because of its ease of use. pointSurvey’s user-friendly interface makes it easy for the survey developers to choose from a wide variety of question types so that each question can be presented in an appropriate format. A key attribute for them is the “Image-Map" question. This allows respondents to identify locations of interest and mark them in response to the survey question. By interacting with the map using simple mouse clicks, the recipient selects the location, problem type, the severity of the problem and adds any comments that may be necessary. In addition, preliminary questions record gender, type of school, mode of transportation and other pertinent data.

The “Map Question” locates trouble spots, and a freetext question for each location allows parents and students to make their own suggestions. Using pointSurvey Alingsås Community and Trafikverket was able to distribute the survey, collect and analyze the data, and then send the final report to all interested parties. This survey also resulted in some beautiful drawings by the children that you will see at this website: www.alingsas.se/trafik-infrastruktur/sakra-skolvagar.

Disabled person access in a new hospital wing

Problem

The director of a hospital has a requirement to determine the accessibility of the new wing in her hospital. The [disabled person ombudsman] requires that data are collected and analyzed from a large sample of disabled persons. These data are used to ensure that the new wing is accessible by the disabled community. Data will be used to verify that proper accommodations have been put in place and to determine locations in the wing where accessibility problems may still exist.

Information from each disabled person must be entered, analyzed and a report generated to document the situation. Survey-taking involves a sequence of tasks that are both time-consuming and error prone so it is desirable to automate the process. The staff is not experienced with the survey process.

Solution using pointSurvey

phone out of reach pointSurvey from Entergate AB was chosen for this project because of its ease of use and the ability to handle the whole survey process from creation to the finished report. The user-friendly interface makes it easy for hospital staff to choose from a wide variety of question types so that each question can be presented in an appropriate format. pointSurvey allows the director to produce an accurate report while minimizing the burden on staff.

The key attribute of pointSurvey is its ability to present a “Map Question” to the respondent. This unique feature allows the respondent to click on locations in the building to indicate places where problems arise. The location can be marked with a “rating” of the problem severity and text entered to further describe the situation.

Questions can be stored in a question bank for easy retrieval. When the survey design is finalized it can then be easily distributed to the respondents via email, SMS or regular post. As responses are received they are automatically stored and analyzed eliminating a large burden on staff. pointSurvey allows the hospital director to access the survey results as the survey proceeds, for a real-time view of the results. At completion of the survey the data is summarized and published in a report that can be published and distributed in a wide variety of formats. In this case the decision was made to publish using word documents and email distribution, both handled easily with pointSurvey.
